Building A Northwest Lodge Style Custom Home In Tetherow

Before working on this luxury custom home in Tetherow, we had previously worked with these clients on various remodeling projects on a townhome they owned as a vacation home in Bend. As part of their retirement plans, they purchased a property in Tetherow with the goal of building a custom home that would become their primary home after moving to Bend.

Because they loved the work we did on their vacation home, when it was time to choose a custom home builder, they knew they wanted to work with PGC Building + Design to make their dream home a reality.

Background Of This Custom Home In Tetherow

Originally from Yakima, these clients knew they wanted to move to Bend in retirement. They found and purchased a lot in Tetherow, which had incredible mountain views, the golf course on two sides, and a lake view. Their goal was to build a Northwest lodge style home that would hopefully become an heirloom home that could be passed on for generations. 

Because of the location and the amazing views, we designed this home with a somewhat unconventional setup where the view of the home from the street was blocked by the garage; however, designing the home this way meant that almost every room in the home had Cascade Mountain views. The only room that didn’t have mountain views was the primary suite. Instead, this room had lake views, making it a very peaceful and serene environment.

For this custom home in Tetherow, we endeavored to source local materials and use local artisans and vendors as much as possible. All of the wood came from a mill in Prineville, and local artisans came in to craft custom elements throughout the home.

The result was a 4800 square foot, classic Northwest style lodge home, complete with grand rooms, wood accents, and stone throughout. The natural materials and classic design were specifically selected to create a home with timeless design and a style that would endure for generations.

Adapting To Client Needs + Challenges During This Custom Home Build In Tetherow

The majority of this custom home build in Tetherow went very smoothly from start to finish. One of the greatest challenges we encountered was the manufacturer sending the wrong wood for the deck, which was lower grade and did not work for this home. 

While this did interrupt the building process, we were able to work with our long-time local supplier to get a reimbursement for the incorrect product and find a replacement that did work well so that we could continue to build the outdoor space as designed. 

Another challenge was mapping out all of the smart technology in this home. To ensure that everything was correctly wired, there was additional planning upfront to determine how the lights would be wired and where the hubs would be located. We worked diligently with the clients to collaborate on the smart home capabilities they wanted and to map out the plan to make execution easier during the build.

Adaptations Made During The Build

As we worked on this home and learned more about these clients, we helped incorporate a few ideas to further customize their home to their lifestyle and preferences during the building process.

After learning that these clients loved wine, we helped to turn a planned closet into a wine cellar for them. Another adaptation made during the build was to accommodate the mobility issues of one of the homeowners. When we learned the homeowner loved to take baths, but had mobility restrictions that made it difficult to get into a typical tub, we created a personal tub entrance fit to the homeowner’s needs that made it much easier to get into and out of the tub.

Highlights Of This Custom Home

Incorporating Locally Crafted Custom Elements

In this custom home in Tetherow, we focused on working with local artisans to create custom pieces unique to the home. 

Inside the home, the cabinets were made locally and left unfinished. Then local artisans came in to distress the cabinets as well as the wood beams in the home. We also worked with a local metal artist to create the custom handrails and the kitchen vent hood. 

Outside, we installed custom metal gates, adding an air of grandeur and contributing to the Northwest style lodge feel that the clients were looking for in their new home.

Incredible Outdoor Living Space To Take Advantage Of The Views

With such incredible views and the amazing climate we have here in Bend, we designed an ample outdoor living space that would take advantage of the views. The back of the house, which had the golf course and mountain views, had an extensive back deck that stretched the full length of the home. This outdoor living space included a built-in fireplace, a built-in BBQ, and multiple seating areas. For an added element of relaxation, there was also a hot tub dropped into the deck.

Theater Room Experience

Adding to the amenities in this custom home in Tetherow was a theater room complete with smart technology. The technology in the room was designed so that when a movie was started, the shades would go down and the lights would automatically dim to create a more theater-like experience without having to lift a finger. One of the many benefits of adding smart technology to your home.
