A Northwest Contemporary Custom Home + ADU On Bend’s Westside

This Northwest contemporary custom home & ADU project, originally started as a home remodel and addition of one of Bend’s older mill houses; however, after discovering that the foundation of the existing home on Bend’s westside wasn’t able to support the addition, the project turned into a custom home build with an ADU to create the home this couple envisioned.

Background Of This Contemporary Custom Home + ADU in Bend

When purchasing this home, our clients envisioned modernizing the space and adding an addition to build a home that would be their primary residence in retirement. They also wanted to add an ADU to the home for short-term rental use and as a space to host guests.

They were working with a designer, who contacted us to assist with the full home remodel. However, we soon discovered that the foundation of the original home would not support the changes that were to be made, and there was extensive rot that needed to be resolved. 

Because of these issues, it made more sense to tear down the existing home and rebuild a new custom home. The ADU was attached to the primary residence, rather than being a separate structure, due to the size of the lot this home was on. 

Once these changes to the original plans were detailed, we assisted with both the building and any other changes for the remainder of the project.

Collaborating To Create A Northwest Contemporary Custom Home + ADU

For this Northwest Contemporary custom home build, there were many design ideas and elements that the clients knew they wanted from the start. They also knew they wanted to maximize the available living space in their home, although their property was a small lot. Their original designer helped to create the initial plans for their home remodel, bringing many of the initial ideas to life. 

Once we started work on this project, we worked with the couple to refine their plans, incorporating more of their ideas into the final product and adding our expertise on what could be improved to create a space that exceeded their original plans.

One of the updates was a change to the ceiling plans. To create a more spacious feel, we vaulted ceilings throughout the home that were originally designed as flat ceilings. We also helped update the primary suite layout for a better flow.

The end result of the collaboration between the original designer, the clients, and PGC, was an impressive 2,669 square-foot Northwest contemporary-style custom home plus ADU that incorporated everything our clients were looking for in their updated home in Bend.

Full Technology Package

Part of the goal of modernizing their home was to add smart home technology. This included full lighting automation with preset lighting scenes. Other technology was added for full home automation to bring in all the conveniences that smart home technology has to offer.

Unique Materials

When we started working with this couple, they already had a vision for their space, which included many unique materials blending together. 

Porcelain In The Primary Suite

One of the material choices for the primary suite shower was large slabs of porcelain. This uncommon choice created an elevated and elegant feel in the primary suite bathroom.

Bold Elements

In the half baths, bold design choices like a turquoise sink basin and full color tile walls added to the contemporary feel of the home. 

Natural Materials Throughout The Home

Many of the materials incorporated into this luxury custom home in Bend were natural materials, bringing a little bit of the outdoors indoors, a hallmark of Northwest contemporary home design, and in creating a more timeless home design. This custom home included elements like stone fireplaces, exposed wood beams, and natural wood and leather furniture. All of this, paired with modern lighting, enhanced the Northwest contemporary style of this custom home and ADU in Bend, OR.
